Shakira breaks indoor concert attendance record in Portugal

LISBON - A concert by Colombian singer Shakira held here on April 27 set a new record for the largest ever attendance at an indoor concert in Portugal, the Lusa news agency reported. A total of 19,136 people turned out for the concert held at Portugal's 20,000-capacity riverside Atlantic Pavilion, breaking a previous record set by US rock trio R.E.M. back in 1999. Just over 18,000 people turned out to hear R.E.M. perform their angst-ridden songs at that concert which was also held at the five-year-old Atlantic Pavilion, Portugal's largest venue for covered events. Shakira is currently on a world tour to promote her debut English album "Laundry Service," which is triple platinum in the United States and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
