Gabriel Garcia Marquez & Shakira are soundtrack pals

We have the friendship between two uber-famous Colombians to thank for the treat that is Shakira's voice in the soundtrack of "Love in the Time of Cholera."
Gabriel Garcia Marquez asked her to do it, and how could the superstar say no to a legendary compatriot and Nobel Prize winner?
The results are three soulful songs in a mostly instrumental soundtrack by Brazilian composer Antonio Pinto, who also did the music for "City of God" (2003) and "Central Station" (1998).
The CD starts with the spellbinding "Hay Amores," a sensual bolero that showcases Shakira's sultry voice. That song and the more folksy "Despedida" were written for the film by the nine-time Grammy winner in collaboration with Pedro Aznar, an Argentinean musician who has worked with rockers Soda Stereo and Charly Garcia.
The third track, "Pienso en Ti," is a slow version of Shakira's hit from the 1996 album "Pies Descalzos." It works perfectly in the film over images of the coastal region of the Cienaga del Magdalena, in which Garcia Marquez's sets many of his literary works.
Making her debut on the soundtrack of a movie, Shakira manages at times with her voice to convey the essence of Garcia Marquez' magical realism better than the movie itself.
Fittingly, the film was scheduled to have its U.S. premiere last night at a star-studded event in Las Vegas, benefiting Shakira's Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) Foundation.
"Bare Feet supports children and families who have been disenfranchised and displaced by the ongoing conflict in my native Colombia," Shakira said in a press release, "the beautiful land which Garcia Marquez describes with such lushness in 'Love in the Time of Cholera.'"
